On the basis of several studies that were in progress in 1995, the British committee on safety of medicines warned general practitioners of a potentially increased risk of venous thromboembolism among users of third gene¬ration contraceptives. This advice was not given in the United States. Policymakers must be warned that they must differentiate the risk for myocardial infarction that is totally different from thromboembolism caused by DVT. Complications from DVT are as important as myo-cardial infarction because they may cause life-threatening pulmonary embolism.
