XIX. SEXUAL ACTIVITIES

About the Auther > Heart Attacks

Rest is more important before rather than after sexual activity, although if you feel tired after the activity and feel like sleeping, certainly it is wise to have a 30- to 60-minute rest. Therefore, if possible, have intercourse in the morning after a night of sleep or any other time after rest or relaxation. If you are very short of breath or develop chest discomfort during intercourse, stop and take nitroglycerin. Discomfort during your first sexual experience does not mean the discomfort may occur again. It also does not indicate that you are likely to develop a heart attack during intercourse. However, if pain does recur or if there is any difficulty with sexual activity, be sure to discuss this with your doctor at the next office visit. Medications given on discharge may interfere with sexual performance, and these may be reduced at your next office visit. Diuretics (water pills), beta-blockers, antihypertensive drugs, or antidepres-sants can alter sexual performance (see the chapter Erectile Dysfunction and the use of sildenafil).
