IV. SUBSTANCES USED BY ATHLETES
Gamma butyrolactone has been eliminated from products in the United States because of an FDA warning in 1999 to manufacturers. This warning was made because there was a report of more than 55 cases of adverse reactions including coma that required artificial ventilatory support. The coma occurred in a professional basketball player who ingested the substance to aid in sleep and help muscle growth. Gamma butyrolactone is metabolized into gamma-hydroxybutyrate, which is known to cause seizures and coma.
