B. Toole et al.: The Vitamin Intervention
for Stroke Prevention (VISP) Randomized
Controlled Trial
Objecctive: To determine whether high doses of folic acid, pyridoxine, and vitamin B12 administered to decrease homocysteine levels reduce the risk of recurrent stroke compared with low doses of these vitamins.
Methods: In this study 3680 adults with disabling cerebral infarctions were randomized to high- and low-dose formulations of these vitamins.
Results: At the end of two years a moderate reduction of total homocysteine had no effect on vascular outcomes.
